Abstract
This paper discusses how being elderly and gay in Toronto is not a positive experience. The paper explains that the experience is much the same for elderly gays in all cities and that elderly gay men are cut off from younger gay men and also from society. The paper points out that gays and lesbians in Canada have their own gay village right in the downtown area of Toronto and that this area is also known as the gay ghetto. The paper then looks at how the experience of elderly gay people is even worse than the discrimination that results from homophobia and it all has to do with ageism, which puts elderly gay men into yet another ghetto. In conclusion, the paper shows that elderly gay men are also faced with the issues of homophobia and ageism and the process of growing old in Toronto does not seem to have any advantages.

"Gays are mainly found in two areas of Toronto. The first is the Gay Village; the center of that village is Church and Wellesley Streets. The Gay Village is a symbol of exclusion or how gays and lesbians are separate from general Toronto society. Homophobia still exists very strongly, and gays and lesbians are still struggling for equality with the rest of society. In the village, gays and lesbians found "an urban neighborhood that is populated by, and reasonably tolerates, a large number of queers" (Editorial 1). They accomplished something remarkable with the rundown urban neighborhood when they rented apartments that other people rejected and opened businesses where no one else would consider doing so."

Nanny is responsible for her being pressured into becoming involved with this man, as she does not wish Janie to suffer under the same conditions she had undergone as a slave. Hurston defines Nanny as an important figure that was raped by a white plantation owner, and now wishes her granddaughter to avoid this tragically horrific life. However, Logan soon turns to physical abuse, as Janie quickly becomes a mere object in his rise up the economic ladder. This misogynist objectivity makes Janie a servant, much as Nanny was as a slave to her white master. When Logan turns to hitting Janie, it is Joe Starks that recognizes (at this point in the novel) her beauty and individuality, providing an important incentive for Janie to leave Logan:"

Abstract
This paper analyzes the oppression of men through the study of characters and their experiences in two literary works, "Romeo and Juliet" by William Shakespeare and "M. Butterfly" by David Henry Hwang. The paper explains that masculinity is fragile because it is socially constructed and men have to struggle everyday against anything within themselves that many be perceived as not masculine: anything passive, any attraction to the same sex, and even displays of vulnerability are all suppressed. The paper argues that Romeo stepped out of the 'masculinity' assigned to him socially, and because of this, suffered. The paper also looks at how Gallimard, is insecure in his masculinity and uses it, along with his racism and prejudice to destroy himself. In conclusion the paper shows that the male protagonists in both plays are in a way a victim of patriarchy because they do not conform to the 'masculine' ideal.

"Looking at the text closer, it is clear that Romeo does not exhibit typical masculine characteristics, and that Juliet often acts as the more aggressive, less 'feminine' one of the pair. This is evident from the beginning of the play all the way through to the end, where each chooses a different way to die. In the first scene of the play we are introduced to Romeo, both his parents are worried about him, as he seems melancholic. He is sad, in love, and because of this he suffers. "A good deal of new research has been done in recent years concerning women and sales, because sales is perceived as an area in which people can advance rapidly. A good deal of the research in the sales setting has focused on gender based differences in approaches. Females, for example, tend to believe that other sales-people they encounter have a considerable degree of expertise, attributing to them a much higher degree of competence than their male colleagues do. Further, women overall place higher values on cooperative efforts and the fostering of harmonious relations. They also, as noted, tend to tend to use an integrated approach to information tasks. These traits, taken as a whole, allow women to perceive conflict between buyers and sellers as functional rather than dysfunctional. They tended to view these conflicts as exchanges of information, whereas men tended to view them as affective conflict, in which values were genuinely at stake."
